What happen to competing and striving to be successful?
Somewhere along the way we have accepted or changed our views about teaching our children to be competitive and its value in becoming successful. It seems today that being competitive is looked down on; we hear comments such as you only want to win and you will do anything to win. I can see that type of attitude if all you’re teaching and all that is important is the win itself, but there is much more value to be learned from competition.
Being competitive is a requirement to survive:
Every day we have to compete to survive, but yet we seem to not want to teach our children this valuable lesson. I must ask. How will they survive in today’s global world where we are always competing against someone or something from across the entire globe? Yet we now have games were its forbidden to keep score because we might offend the person who loses. Please people! Losing is part of the education of life, if you never lose you will never learn from those failures, worst yet as we teach our children that competitiveness is bad we are disabling them in the real world. To become an athlete, get a job, be successful in business, win an election, get into College, be the best you can be all require you to compete to achieve them, so why is it bad to teach competitiveness?
When you lose, YOU WIN!
Losing teaches you how to become resilience, how to adapt and move on and use your defeat to build your inner strength and develop a no quit attitude. The most successful people in the world have all failed in their lifetimes, but they became successful because they learned the lesson of defeat and moved forward to try again and again until they succeed. Simple they learned how to compete!
In order to succeed, we must embrace our competitive nature:
In order to succeed we must learn to lose, in order to learn to lose we must keep score, we must have a winner and a loser, but we must teach our children that it is about competing and getting better that is important not just the WIN! The only way your child is going to be able to overcome setbacks in life is to learn to be competitive and see the value in competition and working towards success.
